The Northern Jazz Society was formed in 1985 by a group of musicians to promote the playing of jazz music. At first club days and get-togethers were on a pretty much ad hoc basis, being called when the time seemed appropriate. As time went on things became more organized and club days were held on the first Sunday of each month, except for January.
An annual picnic is held in February and for the last fifteen years a jazz festival has been held in October.
We hold our Club Days in Salut Bar & Brasserie, 69 Bank Street, Whangarei, Phone 430 8080.
The Objects of the Society, as set down in the Rules, are:
To promote and foster an appreciation of jazz music in all its forms.
To encourage the playing of live jazz at selected venues.
To actively encourage young musicians and jazz enthusiasts to develop their talent for, and appreciation of, jazz music.
To provide an informal and non-competitive atmosphere in which members can develop their individual skills.
To liase with and form affiliations with other jazz associations and similar organisations.
To make invitation to and host visiting jazz groups and members of other jazz organisations and individual performers.
To organise tours to jazz functions throughout New Zealand.
